LAC+USC Emergency Medicine Residency is a PGY2-4 program which participates in the advanced match. Therefore, applications are received in the beginning of September for the year beginning after internship. Interviews are conducted between November and January.

If you have any specific questions regarding the residency you can contact the Residency Director or Assistant/Associate Directors by email (see faculty email list) or you can call Susan Arnwine, the residency secretary directly at 323-226-6937. The selection process is competitive and many successful applicants are uniquely qualified to pursue GME in EM. Board scores, research and publication, EMS experience and an obvious commitment to the specialty are all important to the selection committee.

Grand rounds
"Getting In"
  • Admission to the Emergency Medicine Residency Program is competitive and all applications are received via ERAS.
  • Having noted the competitive aspect, the program would like to note that USMLE Board Scores and Academic Societies (like AOA) are only PART of the process.
  • Applicants with a strong work ethic and an established record of indigent care (who find this type of medicine rewarding) have an advantage. Research and publication are helpful and many successful applicants have already contributed to the Emergency Medicine Literature.
  • The residency is more diverse than most and reflects the cultural diversity of Los Angeles, which remains a major point of immigration to the United States. 75% of the patients at LAC+USC Medical Center speak Spanish and advanced language skills help residents succeed. It is not unusual to hear 5 languages a day, so any secondary language is helpful.
  • We welcome applicants from around the world and review all completed ERAS applications. Interviews are offered on a "rolling" basis giving early applications a small advantage. Foreign applications must have a valid visa and a letter of eligibilty from the California Medical Board.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR APPLICATION AND GOOD LUCK!
